Although the town of Pennington, in the beautiful Hopewell valley region, had experienced a population boom for some years, its growth in more recent times has remained relatively stable. First settled in the late 17th century, Pennington has undergone a number of name changes. At first named Queenstown in honor of Queen Anne, it later acquired the name of Penny Town, perhaps because of its diminutive 0.9 square miles size. By the middle of the 18th century it had settled into its current name. Like other historic towns in the area, Pennington's architecture is a mixture of Colonial, Federal, Greek Revival and Victorian styles. Convenient to Routes 1 and I-95, it has been a residential center for commuters for decades. The Pennington School, the oldest Methodist secondary school in the United States, is in the center of town. Nearby Kunkel Park and the Stony Brook-Millstone Watersheds Reserve with its extensive nature trails provide recreation.
